One of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning’s (CETL) primary roles is to recognize the faculty at St. Petersburg College. Without the dedicated efforts of our SPC faculty, our students would not be able to achieve their educational goals.
This page showcases certificates and awards SPC faculty have received in recognition of their hard work and commitment to teaching and learning.
ACUE Effective (Online) Teaching Practices Certificate – Faculty who successfully complete four micro-courses focused on either effective teaching practices or effective online teaching practices earn a certificate from the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) based on the Effective Teaching Practices Framework which is endorsed by the American Council on Education. All faculty are eligible to complete the certificate. Details about ACUE offerings will be shared at the Academic Affairs Town Hall meetings and via e-mail.
NISOD Excellence Awards – The NISOD Excellence Awards were established in 1991 to provide NISOD member colleges with an opportunity to recognize individuals doing extraordinary work on their campuses. NISOD member colleges submit the names of faculty and staff each year who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution to their students and colleagues.
Distinguished Faculty Awards – Each year, five faculty members are honored for their work with students with a focus on at least one of the following areas:
- Exceptional use of student success strategies: student coaching and collaboration with college resources that support learning.
- Innovation in student engagement to increase learning in the face-to-face setting.
- Outstanding Leadership in Civic Engagement as part of the student learning experience.
- Innovation in student engagement to increase learning in the remote learning environment.
- Ability to pivot teaching modality.
Nominations for the Distinguished Faculty Awards will be accepted in the spring semester.

Faculty Achievements
Christian Moriarty, Ethics
Christian was a Guest Professor at Riga Technical University in Latvia this semester lecturing on academic integrity. Christian also gave a talk on law and academic integrity at the International Center for Academic Integrity; he will also present “Academic Integrity in Law, Policy, and Artificial Intelligence” at their conference in March 2024. For the National Conference of State Legislators, Christian presented “Artificial Intelligence in Practices and Policy” in October.
David Manson, MIRA
David organized a concert with Dr. José Valentino Ruiz-Resto & Eternal Power at the SPC Music Center on October 5, 2023 As part of the 3-day EMIT Latin Jazz Fest, directed by David.
On October 19, 2023, David led his ensemble ERG in a concert at the Salvador Dali Museum on October 19 in conjunction with the museum’s special exhibit Where Ideas Come From: Dalí’s Drawings. ERG members are David Pate (saxophone & flute), Tom Kersey (cello), SPC faculty member TJ Glowacki (double bass), Jim Stewart (drums) and David Manson (trombone).
Greg De La Piedra, Spanish (Communications)
Greg published an article on the word la madre in Mexican colloquial expression, and its overall focus & theme pertain to Mexican culture, Mexican Spanish and culture instruction to language students. Some of Mexico’s tragic history is reviewed, which means some of the colloquial expressions the article highlights are rather harsh.

JulieAnne Adamich-Scheblein, Accounting (Business)
Julie serves as an “Academic Champion” with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Academic Champions meet via zoom in global forums to discuss accounting education and issues that impact the profession. Academic Champions are encouraged to be ambassadors for the profession and to encourage students at their institutions to major in accounting and become student member members of AICPA.
Laura Malave, Computer & Information Technology
Laura facilitated “Two-Year Program Conversations: Supporting a Diversity of Students, Articulation Pathways, and More, Birds of a Feather” for the Association of Computing Machinery, Special Interest Group – Computer Science Education on March 22, 2024.
Laura received the 2024 National Security Agency Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity Community Service Award as the Top CAE-CD Peer Reviewer on April 17, 2024.
Laura presented “Unlocking the Potential: LLM and ChatGPT Applications for Cybersecurity Careers and Beyond” at the Women in Cybersecurity Conference on April 12, 2024. She delivered the same presentation at the Women in Cybersecurity Virtual 2024 Conference on April 18, 2024.
Laura was appointed to the Executive Board of the Association of Computing Machinery – 2 Year Education on July 1, 2023. This is a two-year appointment.
Li-Lee Tunceren, Communications
St. Petersburg College professor Dr. Li-Lee Tunceren spent the fall 2023 semester abroad teaching as a Fulbright Scholar in Eger, Hungary.
Dr. Tunceren teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) and composition at SPC. During her time in Hungary, she taught applied linguistics and teaching methods to upper-level education students, as well as professional development workshops for faculty.
She says that the Fulbright program provided her with a valuable and empowering experience while also increasing awareness of SPC and the Tampa Bay area. The experience has given her ideas for updating curriculum, engaging online students, and being intentional in helping students engage with one another to encourage cross-cultural communications.
Nathan Heinze, Computer & Information Technology
Nathan published a peer-reviewed article based on a 10-year longitudinal study on sustainability practices at S&P 500 companies. The citation is below.
