About CETL
The mission of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) is to promote and facilitate student learning to the greatest extent possible through research-based professional development opportunities focused on the continual improvement of pedagogy, scholarship, and creative endeavors. CETL provides support and recognition of faculty who strive for excellence in teaching, learning and assessing students in furtherance of student success at SPC.
Goals
- To provide a vision of effective teaching and learning at SPC
- To develop and support a standard of excellence for college-wide pedagogical competencies
- To encourage faculty to continually strive for excellence in the teaching, learning and assessment process
- To serve as an incubator for innovative teaching and learning strategies
- To facilitate sharing and enhancing best practices
- To provide mentoring opportunities, resources, and professional development opportunities for all faculty
- To provide mentorship and training to newly hired faculty

CETL Board of Directors Membership
One Faculty Board of Directors Chair, one Vice-Chair, and nine faculty Board members with
- Diverse representation of faculty from a variety of campuses and academic programs,
- at least one representative of the baccalaureate program,
- at least one representative of the associate of science program, and
- at least TWO adjunct faculty members.
Participation on the CETL Board qualifies as a professional development opportunity for faculty evaluations.
CETL Board of Directors Membership Selection
The CETL Faculty Board of Directors Chair and the CETL Academic Director will be responsible for notifying all faculty of available openings to serve on the Board. Interested faculty will submit an application to express their interest in serving on the Board. The applications of those interested in serving will be submitted to the Board for review and decision. Upon the next scheduled meeting (or special meeting as required), the current board shall vote on filling the vacancy. Selection will be determined based on CETL’s need for representation among disciplines, modalities, and across campuses. Upon approval by the VPAA, the Academic Director will notify the College of selected Board Members.
Length of Service
Board members will serve two-year terms, with an option to serve another one or two-year commitment if considered in good standing by the CETL Academic Director and Faculty Board Chair. Board members who have served two consecutive terms will be required to rotate off the Board and may reapply to serve after one year.
Board Member Responsibilities
- Participate in all Faculty Board of Directors meetings
- Review and recommend revisions to:
- the CETL strategic plan
- the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)
- the annual operational plan
- support SACS and QEP missions
- the guidelines and criteria for the Year 2 Cohort
- the CETL guidelines and other official CETL documents
- Review and recommend for approval:
- grant applications
- distinguished faculty awards
- Solicit input and feedback from respective faculty members to help further the mission of the CETL
- Actively support the mission, goals, and philosophy of the CETL

CETL Faculty Board of Directors Chair Responsibilities (3 ECH Position*)
- Assist CETL Director in:
- establishing and evaluating a strategic plan for the CETL
- establishing and evaluating an annual operational plan for the CETL
- selecting on-site speakers
- selecting topics and speakers for CETL workshops
- providing monthly progress reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs
- Serve as the CETL advocate in meetings as a proxy for the CETL Director
- Bring forward to Faculty Board to review:
- CETL guidelines and other official CETL documents
- grant applications and award applications
- applications to serve on the CETL Faculty Board or as a CETL Faculty Associate
- Assist the Vice President of Academic Affairs in annually evaluating the CETL Director
- Prepare agenda for monthly Faculty Board of Directors’ meetings (fall and spring terms) as well as ad-hoc meetings as necessary
- Ensure that monthly Faculty Board of Directors’ meetings follow parliamentary procedures
- Ensure Faculty Board of Directors monthly meeting minutes are recorded and distributed
- Solicit input and feedback from respective faculty members to help further the mission of the CETL
- Actively support the mission, goals, and philosophy of the CETL
* 3 ECH is per semester for the fall and spring terms.

CETL Faculty Board Member Responsibilities (Voluntary Position)
- Participate in monthly Faculty Board of Directors meetings (fall and spring terms) as well as ad hoc meetings as necessary
- Review and make recommendations to:
- the CETL strategic plan
- the annual operational plan
- the guidelines and criteria for faculty fellows (program to begin in the second year)
- the CETL guidelines and other official CETL documents
- Review and recommend for approval:
- faculty fellow applications
- mini-grant applications
- faculty travel opportunity applications
- Solicit input and feedback from respective faculty members to help further the mission of the CETL
- Actively support the mission, goals, and philosophy of the CETL
